Designing and Printing Item Labels (Next-Gen)

How to setup your labels in Next-Gen and run successful prints

Custom item labels are a simple but powerful way to make your store really stand out. ConsignCloud comes with a built-in label designer so that you can create a label with your store logo, a Discount Schedule for your items, and so much more!

Creating a New Tag

To get started, go to Settings » Items » Label Printing. Find and click the Add Label link to create a new label. ConsignCloud will prompt you with some common label sizes, and allow you to make copies of existing labels to use as a template. If you don't see an option that fits your label exactly, that's fine! It's easy to change the dimensions of your label once you get started.

If you'd like to edit an existing label, find it in the table and click the corresponding arrow icon.

Document Properties

Label Name

This name is included in a list and used throughout ConsignCloud when you print your labels. If you have multiple sizes of label for different kinds of merchandise, make sure to note that in the label name so they'll be easy to tell apart.

Size

Label size is very important. ConsignCloud sends these dimensions directly to your label printer, so if they don't match the label size you have loaded, your label won't print correctly.

NOTE: Most label printing issues stem from size issues!

Orientation

Select between portrait and landscape for designing your label. Labels can be rotated right before printing, so just design your label however is most comfortable for you — there's no need to turn your computer sideways!

Layers

Everything you add to your tag has a stacking order, and some things you add (like pictures) can overlap with and cover up other things you'd like on your tag. You can use the up and down arrows in the layers section to reorder things and make sure everything is stacking in the correct order.

Tools

Once your document properties are filled in correctly, it's time to design your label! ConsignCloud's editor has several tools that each add a different kind of element to your design:

  1. Barcode: This tool places a barcode image on your tag. The barcode will match the SKU for whatever item is being printed. You can enter a sample barcode while you're designing if you'd like to see how very large SKUs (like an ISBN) will look on the tag. Note: Barcodes have a minimum width requirement that depends on the number of digits in the SKU being printed. ConsignCloud will warn you if the barcode size you've chosen looks too small.

  2. Shapes: Most often used for borders or very basic logos.

  3. Text: You'll probably use more of these than anything else. ConsignCloud uses fonts from Google Fonts, and allows you to change attributes like font size and weight. Text fields can be a mixture of static text and variables pulled right from your items. For examples, see the Template Variables section below.

  4. Images: Most often you'll use this to include your logo on your label, but importing a background pattern or design is popular too. You can import any image in .gif, .jpg or .png format. There are no restrictions on image size, but very large images will result in large file sizes for your labels which will interfere with your printing speed. Please shrink down images before importing them into the editor to avoid this problem.

  5. Undo: Available if you make a mistake and want to retrace your steps. This works just like undo in most word processing and image editing programs.

  6. Test Print: Use this button to print a test label and see how your design translates onto paper.

  7. Preview Mode: To view what your template will look like with real values and item data, toggle this on.

  8. Save and Close: When you're all done with your design, use this to save your design and return to the labels list.

Template Variables

Template variables are the most important part of your tags, because they are used to pull in details about the item being printed.

To use a template variable, place a text box onto your label using the text tool, and then surround the variable you'd like to use with double curly brackets, like this:

{{variable}}

If you do it right, ConsignCloud will replace what you type with some special formatting to let you know that a template variable is being used. It will appear in brackets as well.

A list of valid variables shows in your tool pane while you're using the text tool. You can mix and match normal text with template variables. This can be helpful for some variables, like size, that can be confusing without a label of some sort. To do something like this with size, you might type the following into a text box:

For example, Size: {{Size}} into your text box, and it works correctly, ConsignCloud will show you (e.g.) Size: XL on your label.

When your labels print up, "Size:" will always appear followed by the size attribute pulled from whatever item is being printed.

Printing Your Item Labels

Once you have your beautiful labels printing, it's time to tag some inventory.

  • To print labels in bulk, go to Menu » Inventory, and click Actions » Print Labels.

  • To print a label for an individual item, go to an item's detail page, click on the three dots at the top of the left pane, then Print Label.

By default, either of these approaches will simply open a .pdf file in a new tab which you can then print using your browser or system dialog (be sure pop-ups are allowed for ConsignCloud). If you have cloud printing set up, a print dialog will open up, allowing you to preview and configure your labels before sending them to your printer.

You can also print these labels in bulk by going to your Items Table. You can either click on your Unprinted Items Tab, or any other Items you want printed. Click on the box on the left to select multiple items at once, and then click "Print Labels". Go through the same print setup steps (like paper size, number of copies, template, etc.), and it should print those labels all at once!

This will work for both pdf printing and Cloud Printing. Learn more about Cloud Printing in the article below:
