What is a consignor surcharge?
A consignor surcharge is an amount taken out the consignor's portion, usually in order to account for some extra time or money spent on the item. To put it another way,
total consignor portion = their portion of the item's sale - the consignor surcharge.
This is usually used for things like dry cleaning, processing, or transportation. Occasionally stores will agree with their consignors to split the cost of credit card processing, so a consignor will receive a credit card surcharge for items bought with a card.
In general, ConsignCloud does not recommend the use of consignor surcharges. We believe anything that lacks transparency or is hard to understand denigrates consignor trust. Be open with them: it's 50/50 or 40/60 or whatever your split is. Of course it depends on your industry and its specifics, but remember that consignors are your best customers. Sometimes a little more consignor trust pays dividends down the line in ways that $0.50 here and there doesn't.
That said, occasionally it's a good idea or necessary for your industry.
How do I apply a consignor surcharge?
As you enter an item, click "Advanced Options". Apply a dollar amount surcharge.
How do I apply a consignor surcharge across the board?
You can apply a default consignor surcharge in "Settings" for all items. If you choose to do this, all items you add will by default have the surcharge attached, unless you go into "Advanced Options" as you enter the item.
Can I apply percentage surcharge, instead of dollar amount?
Instead of a percentage, you should just change your overall consignor split. It really won't make a difference to your consignors if it's 50% - 5% for transportation. Just change it to 45%.
Can I apply surcharges based on price?
If you go to "Settings" and then to "Price Points" on the left, you can apply a series of behaviors to items based on their price. That is, if it's $50 or lower, it will have no surcharge, but if it's above $50, it will have a $2.00 surcharge.
