Using Surcharges

How to Apply Surcharges to Items, and How they Appear on Sold Items

Adding a Surcharge to an Item

If your surcharge hasn't automatically been applied to an item with a tag, add a surcharge in your Item Creation Form. If you don't see that field, you may have to edit your item fields and add it first.

Once the item sells, that surcharge will affect the split differently depending on which type of surcharge it is. Read the article below for a quick overview of which surcharge is which, or keep reading to understand how surcharges appear on items once sold:

Buyer's Fees

If a Surcharge is applied to an item before time of sale, the sold item will show in the Split Breakdown with the name displayed from the Sale Detail Page:

For a Buyer's Fee, the percentage will take from both the consignor and store equally, and then give that amount to the store. So, for example, if an item sells for $100 with a 10% Buyer's Fee Surcharge and the split is 50/50, $5 is taken from the consignor and $5 from the store and both are given to the store ($10). The consignor's split is now a little closer to 45%, but instead is listed as 50% with a 10% Buyer's fee surcharge. Now, the Consignor will receive $45 instead of what they would have originally received, $50.

Consignor's Fee

If a surcharge is a Consignor's Fee, the math will look a little different. This surcharge is only taken from the Consignor's portion. So, if an item with a price of $100 from a consignor with a 50/50 split is sold, a 10% surcharge (for example) would take $10 from the consignor portion. So, instead of the consignor receiving $50, they now receive $40.

Credit Card Fee

Credit Card Fees are designed to compensate for processing fees, and card brands sometimes disallow these surcharges to be charged to consumers. Instead, some stores pass them on to consignors. Credit Card surcharges are also taken from the consignor's portion after the split has been figured (exactly like a Consignor Fee). The only difference is that a Credit Card Fee will be applied in the POS at time of item sale instead of at time of Item Creation.

NOTE: When a Surcharge is applied at time of item sale, it will not show in the POS the same way a tax or discount might. To make sure that your Credit Card Fee will definitely apply, have the surcharge set to the Rule "Apply to all Items" and use the payment type "Credit Card" to finalize the sale.

Instead of the surcharge showing up as a line item on the Item Detail Page, it instead shows on the Sale Detail Page of the Sale it was used in.
