Setting up and configuring taxes in Next-Gen

How do I use Taxes?

Taxes, of course, need to be tracked in order for you to collect sales tax for your business. Tax rates and requirements can vary widely by jurisdiction, so we've provided a flexible model for implementing them.

You can create a new tax by clicking "Add Tax" under the "Tax" tab in the your ConsignCloud Settings Screen under the "Sales" category.

––Creating a Tax––

Tax Options

Taxes come in two types:

  • Add to Tag Price (Exclusive) — Exclusive taxes are added to an item's price at the time of sale. Sales Tax in the United States is a common example of this kind of tax.

  • Include in Tag Price (Inclusive) — Inclusive taxes are included in the tag price of an item, based on its price after removing taxes. Sales tax in the UK and Australia is a common example of this kind of tax.

While taxes are generally applied in the POS, it's also possible to mark items as Tax Exempt during the Item Creation. This will cause no taxes to be automatically applied to the item when it added to a sale.

Rules

Rules can also be applied to Taxes. Tax rules include:

  • Apply to All Items - This replaces the Classic toggle "On by Default"

  • Apply to Items with Tag

  • Apply to Items in Category

  • Apply to Items in Price Range

NOTE: For Tag and Category Rules, Tags and Categories must already be created before being applied to a Tax Rule.

––Removing a Tax From a Sale––

If you're running a tax-free weekend or selling to a tax-exempt customer, taxes can be quickly turned off for every item in the sale. In the Sale screen, find the name of the default tax you'd like to disable. Then, click "Adjust Taxes" and select "Remove Tax". This will enable and disable taxes for every item in the sale. However, if you clear or finalize and start a new sale, taxes will be reset to normal again.

Normally, taxes are auto-applied, but after scanning an item into the POS, you can also adjust taxes on individual items. Changing taxes for an individual item won't change the tax settings of any other items in the sale.

––Adding Taxes to Individual Items––

To turn taxes off for individual items, first click the "Adjust Taxes" button on the right side of your screen. Then you can select any checkboxes on the left of your items to disable or enable taxes individually.
